Cancer Imaging Program
Diagnostic imaging is an integral part of cancer patient care. It helps guide clinical decision-making to ensure safe, high-quality, appropriate care. The Cancer Imaging Program promotes timely access to high-quality imaging in Ontario.
Purpose
- Improve the quality of cancer imaging and optimize its safe, appropriate use
- Improve patient access to cancer imaging
- Facilitate and accelerate evidence-based change
- Improve effective communication within the radiology community, and between radiologists and other healthcare providers
Program Initiatives
- Develop and foster a culture of quality in diagnostic imaging by:
- strengthening relationships between clinicians and health administrators, and between organizations
- improving collaboration between organizations that work to improve the quality of care
- Develop and put into action strategies to increase awareness among physicians of appropriate imaging referrals for people with cancer
- Identify and assess wait times and access for priority procedures, and support improvement through best practice sharing across Ontario
- Lead the development and support the implementation of evidence-based structured radiology reporting
- Oversee the PET Scans Ontario Program with an evidence-based approach; ensure timely access to PET scans is available to Ontarians for appropriate indications
- Provide guidance on interventional oncology services, including focal tumour ablation and vertebral augmentation services; work with healthcare administrators and providers on how to organize and deliver these services
