Vertebral Augmentation Services

Cancer Care Ontario provides provincial oversight for vertebral augmentation services for cancer patients with vertebral compression fractures.

In 2016, we put together the Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty Working Group to develop recommendations for these services. Working with clinical experts, we developed the criteria for patient selection and service provider requirements. The aim is to make sure patients have access to high quality, effective and sustainable care.

Next Steps

  • Work with the Interventional Oncology Steering Committee and Regional Cancer Programs to move to a more organized, integrated and multidisciplinary model of interventional oncology services across Ontario
  • Work with hospitals that provide interventional oncology services to plan for growth in demand, and to monitor emerging technologies
  • Measure and report on the quality and availability of interventional oncology services to make sure cancer patients receive the highest quality care
