Radiation Treatment Program

The Radiation Treatment Program ensures timely access to safe, evidence-based, high-quality radiation treatment. To improve patient experience and treatment, the program works with regional partners and clinical experts.

Purpose

  • Ensure patients receive appropriate and high-quality radiation treatment based on best available evidence and expert consensus
  • Ensure radiation treatment is safely delivered for patients and staff
  • Ensure patients access the radiation system appropriately, quickly and efficiently
  • Ensure patients receive care as close to home as possible
  • Foster an environment for technical innovation and participation in clinical trials and research

Program Initiatives

  • Promote peer review of patient radiation treatment plans to ensure safety and accuracy in delivery of care
  • Improve patient access to proton-based therapy in a manner that is person-centred, coordinated and cost effective
  • Improve coordination of care for patients receiving concurrent chemo-radiation treatment
  • Facilitate a new model of care based on expertise from radiation treatment professionals by supporting the activities of the Advanced Practice Radiation Therapist role
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer among clinical experts through communities of practice to reduce provincial variation and encourage adoption of best practices

The Radiation Treatment Program hosts communities of practice, which are made up of members who share an interest in a topic and want to deepen their expertise by meeting regularly. This is an effective way to transfer knowledge and share best practices to ensure high-quality care. Communities of practice are offered in these specialties:

  • Lung cancer
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Gynaecologic cancers
  • Radiation therapy (MRTT)
  • Medical physics
  • Radiation Safety Officers
  • Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist
