Oncology Nursing Program
The Oncology Nursing Program improves patient experience and outcomes in Ontario. It does this by building capacity, providing clinical leadership and improving access to oncology nurses. Nurses are essential providers of cancer services and key leaders in driving quality improvement within healthcare teams, practice settings, organizations and communities.
Purpose
- Improve access to quality, person-centred oncology nursing expertise across the patient journey and the system
- Advance the quality of nursing care by building oncology nursing competency in the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality cancer care
- Collaborate with patients, families and healthcare providers to promote evidence-informed care that maximizes patients’ health
Program Initiatives
- Develop, support and implement provincial models of oncology nursing care that promote the best use of nursing roles
- Promote the effective use and integration of oncology nurses in the delivery of cancer services
- Increase nursing knowledge and skills by building oncology nursing competencies and standards in the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality cancer care
- Provide clinical advice and support for other Cancer Care Ontario programs and their work
- Identify oncology nursing documentation competencies and align them with regulatory and national standards
- Partner with the Systemic Treatment Program to identify nursing training requirements for chemotherapy in the home
