Cancer Risk Factors in Ontario: Tobacco

Jan 2014
Data Type: Risk Factors
Publication Series: Cancer Risk Factors in Ontario

This is the second report in the Cancer Risk Factors in Ontario series. It extends the work of the evidence summary report, which summarized the epidemiologic evidence for a wide range of cancer risk factors, by providing detailed information on the prevalence and distribution of tobacco smoking, smoking cessation and second-hand smoke exposure in Ontario. This information will inform public health and health professionals, as well as policy-makers involved in tobacco and cancer control efforts.

This report uses a cancer perspective to examine tobacco use in Ontario and includes:

  • estimates of the cancer burden in the province related to tobacco-smoking

  • examinations of socio-demographic and geographic variations in tobacco smoking, smoking cessation and exposure to second-hand smoke

  • a section on tobacco use and exposure among Ontario’s off-reserve Aboriginal population
