Ontario Cancer Statistics 2024 is the fifth in a series of reports that provide comprehensive information on the burden of cancer in Ontario. Produced by the Surveillance Program at Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario), the report is organized around four indicators: incidence, mortality, survival and prevalence.
2024 marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Ontario Cancer Registry, the main data source for Ontario Cancer Statistics 2024 and one of the largest cancer registries in North America. The analyses and interpretation of Ontario Cancer Registry data in this report provide a better understanding of the current and future state of cancer, identify priority areas and help evaluate cancer control efforts.
This edition of the report includes:
- cancer burden statistics, by sex and age group, for the latest years of data available at the time of analyses, 1986 to 2020, and projections (i.e., estimates) for the most recent years, 2021 to 2024
- statistics about cancer in children (ages 0 to 14 years), provided by the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario. See the spotlights on childhood cancer in Chapter 2 (incidence), Chapter 3 (mortality) and Chapter 4 (survival)
- a special focus chapter (Chapter 1) that provides insight into the patterns and trends of cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 to 2022)
The information in this report is intended to support decision-makers, the public health community, health care providers, researchers and others involved in planning, investigating, measuring and monitoring population-based cancer control efforts, including cancer screening, prevention and treatment. The report may also be useful for the general public who have an interest in cancer.
