Designated Cancer Surgery Centres

Designated centres are hospitals that meet certain safety and quality standards for a particular procedure or type of care. In Ontario, designated cancer surgery centres have been established for:

  • hepato-pancreatic biliary (HPB) cancers (liver, pancreas and bile ducts)
  • thoracic cancers (lung and esophageal)
  • head and neck cancers
  • gynecological cancers (ovaries, cervix, vulva and uterus)

Ontario’s 10 designated HPB centres handle over 90% of all HPB cancer surgeries in the province.

Ontario’s 15 designated thoracic centres handle over 90% of thoracic cancer surgeries in the province.

Ontario has 9 gynecologic oncology centres (GOCs) that perform surgery for ovarian, cervical, vulvar and high-grade endometrial cancers.
