Psychosocial Oncology Program

The Psychosocial Oncology Program focuses on interventions that improve the patient experience, support patients and their families through the cancer continuum, and enhance quality of life.

Psychosocial oncology addresses the social, practical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, functional and quality-of-life impact of cancer on patients and their families.

Purpose

  • Improve timely access to quality psychosocial oncology care throughout the cancer continuum
  • Reduce psychosocial morbidity related to unmet physical, emotional, practical and spiritual needs

Program Initiatives

  • Develop program quality indicators, which profile patient experience measures to drive performance
  • Develop and implement a psychosocial oncology service delivery framework
  • Carry out knowledge translation and exchange of psychosocial oncology guidelines
  • Participate in and advise on the development of pathway maps, in collaboration with the Disease Pathway Management Program
  • Expand and integrate access to rehabilitation services as a component of cancer care, in collaboration with the Survivorship Program
  • Use resource intensity weights to enhance partnership between the Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care programs, Ontario Cancer Symptom Management Collaborative, and the Disease Pathway Management Program
