Systemic Treatment Clinical Trials

We launched a new version of the Clinical Trials Policy in December 2016. See the Clinical Trials Policy section on the Funding for Clinical Trials page to download the policy and related documents.

At some point during cancer treatment, patients may be given the opportunity to participate in clinical trials involving systemic therapy drugs. Clinical trials can help to improve patient outcomes and, along with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, we strongly support them.

Together, we and the ministry developed a Clinical Trials Policy that introduces an application and assessment process. This policy describes how participation in a particular clinical trial may affect eligibility for public cancer drug funding during or after the trial. It also explains when treatment preparation and delivery, and related clinical care for patients will be publicly funded.

Applicants are encouraged to submit an application for review as soon as the information is available.

How to Submit a New Request

The applicant must be a practicing physician affiliated with, and involved in the clinical trial recruiting for an Ontario hospital or cancer centre.

  1. Before submitting a new request, please search the clinical trials assessment table to find out if your clinical trial is listed as pending or complete. In these cases, there is no need to submit a new request. The status of pending requests is updated weekly.
  2. Complete the Systemic Treatment Clinical Trials Request Intake Form

  3. Submit the completed form to oh-cco_clinicaltrials@ontariohealth.ca.
