Aboriginal Cancer Strategy

The Aboriginal Cancer Strategy is a roadmap for addressing the unique cancer care issues affecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities by promoting a holistic approach to cancer education, prevention, screening and research.

\Working together with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, we created a strategy that focuses on 6 strategic priorities over 4 years:

  • Building productive relationships
  • Research and surveillance
  • Prevention
  • Screening
  • Palliative and end-of-life care
  • Education

The execution of the third Aboriginal Cancer Strategy – a deliverable of the fourth Ontario Cancer Plan – will help cancer control stakeholders in Ontario jointly develop, fund and implement Aboriginal cancer control policies and programs. The goal is to improve the performance of the cancer system for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities in a way that honours the Aboriginal Path of Well-being.

The Aboriginal Path of Well-being

  • Health in balance
  • Wellness, both emotional and spiritual
  • Active choice
  • Holistic approach
  • Understand root causes
  • Joint and personal responsibility

Past Success

The third Aboriginal Cancer Strategy builds on the success of previous strategies by continuing on the path toward health equity and well-being for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities. As we move forward on this path, we remain committed to building on the achievements made through the second Aboriginal Cancer Strategy.

Those achievements include:

  • establishing 6 relationship protocols with First Nations, Inuit and Métis, and Indigenous organizations and communities across Ontario
  • developing Aboriginal cancer plans in concert with 10 Aboriginal cancer leads and patient navigators
  • gaining new knowledge of cancer in First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and creating programs to increase cancer awareness
