About Pathway Maps
Pathway maps are flowcharts that show a high-level overview of the care an Ontario cancer patient should receive. However, each patient’s actual path may differ depending on the individual’s circumstances.
Pathway maps are organized by cancer type (e.g., lung cancer) and phase along the cancer continuum (e.g., screening, diagnosis, treatment). They are intended for healthcare providers and administrators. They may also serve as a resource for individuals who are new to the cancer system, such as students.
How Pathway Maps Are Developed
Pathway maps are developed based on evidence from local, national and international clinical practice guidelines. If there is not enough scientific evidence, the consensus of multidisciplinary experts in Ontario is used.
